SHE CALLED ME RED
“Cabramatta” is an autobiographical interactive and print comic about growing up in a community of Vietnam War refugees resettled in Australia’s heroin capital.
She Called Me Red, 2018
She Called Me Red is a world-first, live documentary for Instagram about the Rohingya refugee crisis, told from the personal perspective of 21-year-old Yunus and his family. Yunus’s family fled a military offensive by the Myanmar army that has been described by the United Nations as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing” of the Rohingya people.
The stories of Yunus’ escape, his new life in Australia and his family who remain in a refugee camp are told with a combination of text, art, data visualisation, user-generated content, professional photography and videos sent directly from the Thangkali Refugee Camp, Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

She Called Me Red takes its name from Yunus’ childhood in Myanmar, where before being forced to flee, his grandmother dubbed him “Lalaya” – or red – because of his pale skin that easily burnt in the sun.
